McCartney and Starr at Harrison film
premiere LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -
The two surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have made a
rare joint appearance at the world premiere for a documentary film of
last year's concert tribute to their late colleague, George Harrison. McCartney and Starr,
accompanied by their respective wives, Heather Mills and Barbara Bach,
arrived separately at the Wednesday evening event but spoke briefly and
posed together for pictures on the Warner Brothers Studios lot in
Burbank, California. The two former Fab Four
musicians were joined at the screening by fellow recording stars Tom
Petty, Sheryl Crow and Jeff Lynne, along with Harrison's widow, Olivia,
their son, Dhani, and Yoko Ono, the widow of ex-Beatle John Lennon.
The movie,
"Concert for George", captures the all-star concert staged
last November at London's Royal Albert Hall celebrating the life and
music of Harrison a year after he died of cancer at 58. Lennon was shot
to death in 1980 by a deranged fan outside his Manhattan apartment
building.
Both McCartney and
Starr performed at the sell-out benefit concert, as did Petty, Lynne, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Harrison's musical mentor, Indian sitar
virtuoso Ravi Shankar.
The 90-minute film is
due for release October 3 in about three dozen cities around the United
States. This

HAMBURG, DECEMBER 1961 - JANUARY 1962
Paul remembers the somewhat awkward
transition: After Hamburg it wasn’t too
good. Everyone needed a rest. I expected
everyone to be ringing me to discuss what we
were doing, but it was all quiet on the
Western front. None of us called each other,
so I wasn’t so much dejected as puzzled,
wondering whether it was going to carry on
or if that was the last of it.
I started working at a coil-winding
factory called Massey and Coggins. My dad
had told me to go out and get a job. I’d
said, “I’ve got a job, I’m in a band.” But
after a couple of weeks of doing nothing
with the band it was, “No, you have got to
get a proper job.” He virtually chucked me
out of the house: “Get a job or don’t come
back.” So I went to the employment office
and said, “Can I have a job? Just give me
anything.” I said, “I’ll have whatever is on
the top of that little pile there.” And the
first job was sweeping the yard at Massey
and Coggins.
I went there and the personnel officer
said, “We can’t have you sweeping the yard,
you’re management material.” And they
started to train me from the shop floor up
with that in mind. Of course, I wasn’t very
good on the shop floor – I wasn’t a very
good coilwinder.
One day John and George showed up in
the yard that I should have been sweeping
and told me we had a gig at the Cavern. I
said, “No, I’ve got a steady job here and it
pays 7 pounds 14 shillings a week. They are
training me here. That’s pretty good, I
can’t expect more.” And I was quite serious
about this. But then – and with my dad’s
warning still in my mind – I thought, “Sod
it, I can’t stick this lot.” I bunked over
the wall and was never seen again by Massey
and Coggins. Pretty shrewd move really, as
thing turned out.”
George added his memories about early
Cavern gigs for the record: We used to play
lunchtime dates. We'd get up and go down to
the Cavern and play from noon till about
two. It was very casual, we'd have our tea
and sandwiches and cigarettes on stage, sing
a couple of tunes and tell a few jokes.
There was something that even Brian Epstein
liked about all that, although he pushed us
away from that to a bigger audience.

The moment in time between the burn out and the
big break came around the change from late 1961
into early 1962. Paul's chart and comments from

it all.
