Leto (Roman Latona), an early wife of Zeus [prior to meeting Hera], and mother of Apollo and Diana, personified a powerful silence, unobtrusive, chaste, kindly, ready to help and tend, and subordinating herself to her children. Leto is often shown in a garden with woodland creatures. Apollo, god of the sun, was a devoted son and a bright companion, which one would expect in a gifted poet and wise prophet. Diana, goddess of the moon, was beautiful and graceful as the secrets of Nature, mighty mysteries of life.
