THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES director Mark Pellington has this to say about the idea of multi-dimensional events – central topic of this film, "We…all of us involved in this film, believe in the possibility of believing, of feeling and seeing…This is not sci-fi." The book and film are based on a peculiar string of paranormal phenomena during 1966 and 1967, and the structural collapse of the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio during Christmas rush hour traffic in 1967.

"THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES" book and film are based on a peculiar string of paranormal phenomena during the mid-60s, on the Eastern seaboard, in sympathetic response to the Summer of Love paranormal activity on the West Coast. Drivers on the bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio were caught on Christmas Eve. Gridlock brought bridge traffic to a stop before the structure buckled and deconstructed in the water.

The Mothman Prophecies was filmed on location in the town of Kittanning, Pennsylvania
and many of the production props and set designs are now on display in Point Pleasant's Mothman Museum. Butch Kane, owner of Foodland/Kittanning, and Bernie Bowser, Jr., Mayor of West Kittanning and Assistant Manager of Foodland/Kittanning, provided the Mothman Lives page with photos from the Foodland grocery store in Kittanning, PA.

This genre of parapsychology ventures a little off the beaten track because of variations in treatment and interpretation of "mothman" as a unique symbol of nocturnal wisdom. The film adheres to the pursuit of an intermittent materialization as defined by an Eastern system. There is no attempt to delve into established and available information one would discover in any clean and well lit metaphysical reading room. The film offers a witness/researcher [real life author of the book] with a "mothman" definition retrieved from a rummaged history lodged in an obscure belief system. The trail of the Western "mothman" tradition was never picked up so follow up was not referenced nor utilized either by author or reporter in the film. With that aside, the paranormal background value of the film is high volume for those into unexplained phenomenon and films about things that go bump in the night.  Don't see it alone - The Mothman Prophecies is a bona fide spine-tingling chiller!

Linked with bizarre techno-kink special effects and multiple sightings by eye witnesses, documentations allude to sub-text rumors typical of civilian surveillance set-ups, circa 60's Summer of Love. Pellington wisely shies away from the temptation to meander into the land of  'worse-case' scenario storytellers. Credible accounts of a seven-foot winged humanoid type with hypnotic red eyes should be sufficient to generate white knuckle syndrome for anyone in the audience. Gere is perfectly suited to his empathic Washington journalist character, John Klein. The superimposition of a sound Scorpio ascending  tone - the sense of self-preservation - is sextile to his eleventh house Libra.

Scorpio is the sign of mystery, initiation, and rejuvenation. If blended with the PR skills bestowed by Libra in the house of the unknown and unexplained, we have a match for actor and script. As a survivor of a tragic car accident and loss of his wife (Scorpio), Klein lives up to his reputation as a first string investigative reporter when he makes connections in Point Pleasant. His natural inclination to follow the magnetic attraction to the veil surfaces in a dazzling bit of late night right brain driving (Libra stellium in the eleventh house of boundless space, intra-dimensional intersections.)

Gere's reputation is built on work with characters renown for wordsmith skills, delivered with  mechanical draftsman-like precision (Virgo-Libra.) Some were characters with misdealt hands (RED CORNER) and a discrepancy between inner and outer paradigms (INTERSECTION, AUTUMN IN NEW YORK) - in search of fairness, equilibrium (Libra) or wholeness (Sun-Saturn-Pallas Athena in Virgo.) Simultaneous to the storyline in RED CORNER, milestone digital visual effects achieved a perfect portrayal of city and background sets based on matte paintings of Beijing from photographs. Details of this art form are often based on a pattern idea infused with a new spirit, righteousness, or cannonizer principal. Technicians with the Virgo-Aquarius quincunx enjoy the profound chemistry required to map whole farthings of pre-creation associated with 'the laboratory'. They reveal the new understandings we need for the transition to the Age of the Child... the Aquarian Era.

As the FIRST KNIGHT, Lancelot is an unmatchable  shining-star and Leo legend, a man with spiritual ownership of his noble accoutrements and banners flying high in the public eye (Gere's Leo Midheaven, the public image.) Lancelot's private life, something of an emotional wasteland, swings in time with the gauntlet he beats or age old axioms referring to loneliness at the top (Sun-Saturn-Pallas Athena in Virgo.)

Gere's Saturn in his own house of reputation, honor, and one's legacy to those who will follow, indicates classic, positive golden age characteristics. They are: a strong will, concentration, endurance, self-restraint and economy that eventually yield the cornucopia. He is so adaptable (Moonchild Mars trines Ascendant) that his personality shines in sunlight or moonlight. Gere's sojourn into paranormal research in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES opens the door to a universe of multiple possibilities extant in a metaphysical paradigm. Mothman himself is associated with the sign Scorpio; night life of it's own definition. Nocturnal moths typify the secret wisdom; they are easily camouflaged by darkness (ignorance.)

Tolkien provides Gandalf with a moth-ally in the first and third installments of his trilogy,  "The Lord of The Rings." The Fellowship of the Ring, that begins the story,  sets out to establish the members of the Fellowship and those in opposition to the Nine Walkers. An old mole, Saruman the White, faces off against the guide of the group, Gandalf the Gray, by springing a trap and binding him by magic atop the great tower Orthanc. The Moth reaches the Gray Pilgrim, languishing in inclement weather, and goes to fetch a great eagle to carry Gandalf to Rivendell.     The Moth also reports ghastly pictures to Gandalf. These communications reveal the deadly  truth about the army of Saruman and Sauron. In the Tolkien interpretation of the Moth as facilitator, ally, and communicator there is a benign characteristic also present in, The Return of the King. These are standard reports of Moth ally investigations and explorations, according most people.

Sagittarius is Gere's Moon-Vesta constellation, famous for the unique ability to recognize and report things as they are, neither embellishing nor detracting as they take shape moment by moment. Truth and character override other concerns. When Tolkien's Mars entered Sagittarius, for example,  he began his first draft of Elvish tongues and legends for Middle-earth. He was able to elevate thought above differences people employ to define themselves. Sagittarius rules the higher mind - what the ancient Greeks tag 'theurgy' - and beyond grey matter intellect.

It's close to "what you see is what you get," without associated "human perspective" problems.  Reporting well may depend on the basic comprehension of the subject by the reportee, yet Gere's skillful management of this labyrinth leave his fans hoping for more. People pick up on invisible threads and subtle patterns designed by an underlying story line. One of the best things about the film is the collection of reviews - no two are alike.  Mothman critiques seem to be based, not as much on the work, but on parapsychology and paranormal knowledge and attitude of each author. See a list of them - no two spectators viewed this picture the same way.

The fact-finding backup Klein acquires in "The Mothman Prophecies" arrives like a Monday morning quarterback, so Klein feels helpless. Klein slowly pieces together a jig-saw puzzle bit by bit, following unfolded events. Naturally, preparation for initiation develops in time so everything is revealed according to individual capacity. The Mothman gives clues so people may learn to understand the way of things. Klein seems prepared for much more than he is being given by Mothman during this film so a slight departure from metaphysical standards sounds an odd tone.

Gere's Scorpio ascendant and Virgo-Libra planets (critic-PR spokesman) give that realistic bite of believability to a stargate storyline in the middle of bluegrass country that briefly became America's most notorious geopathic zone.  The story of John Klein (Gere) is a parallel to the real life author, John Keel, who arrived in Point Pleasant during December 1966, taking down notes from the moment of he arrived. Despite countless predictions and paranormal buzzwords, the following December the 700-foot Silver Bridge suddenly buckled during the evening commute crunch. Mark Pellington accurately portrays the event and tragic loss of life showing how 31 vehicles plunged off the bridge, taking 67 people into the Ohio River.

Everything related to the Keel Mothman is accurate but when you put the key in the ignition to start the car, the engine doesn't turn over. No thorough, historic, or zealous documentation of the Mothman has been introduced into the mainstream of today. Language barriers are an obstruction to an accurate translation, for one thing. There seems no interest in the source of all these reports past the source book of investigative journalist John A. Keel. Why? All that has taken place so far involves the sighting maps when there has been an encounter of the first, second, or third kind.

Mothman is type casting without lines that deliver Mothman because the book's author functioned with  limited search engine powers - he was a skeptic at the time of his first paranormal encounter and knew of no mainstream link to verifiable data. That fact installs an accurate buffer of nervous energy between both reporters in the film. Though direction is always tightening the tension of the story, we leave with a trail of question marks in the snow and, intellectually that's it. And then there's the rest of the story...

Dowsing is a search for the truth extended into an external environment that responds conformably in action with  Sagittarian supervision (Jupiter in Capricorn.) Going over the area of land and water from Hwy 62 (Mothman sighting) near Clifton F. McClintic site, heading south through Point Pleasant and Chief Cornstalk grounds, the Silver Bridge connections with land clearly show a delineated power zone.

Unusual activity has also been reported on the Ohio side, easily marked on a map using dowsing tools. Gere's Leo Midheaven and the power of his fourth and eighth houses, traditionally linked with paranormal consciousness, allow hopeful speculation there are future flicks about parapsychology in the wings. The actor may know of corresponding "warp zones" in California during the same years (Summer of Love in San Francisco) when unexplained phenomena and paranormal sightings were viewed by many (downtown Market/Hyde area and more) and were reported.  Richard Gere's versatile performance in CHICAGO garnered his Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for best actor. The nominations, predictable from his nativity star chart [Virgoan Saturn-Sun conjunct fixed star Regulus in Leo, dominating Gere's Midheaven] were set in motion in 2003.

Originally, Gere may have had some doubts about acting; thankfully, he  overcame them. Now he acts on his own merit as a star and with strong co-stars, or in a troupe -whatever the script prompts him to take on as a role. Gere is comfortable alone as a headliner because Saturn's Midheaven tone is the confidence to go it alone, put up with hard work no one will ever hear about... it can even mean loneliness [The Mothman Prophecies, Red Corner] and surrender [Rhapsody in August] regardless of it's zodiacal sign. Gere's powerful seventh house, the stage or courtroom, works superbly with an ensemble cast for "Chicago" (trine his Libra stellium in eleventh dept. of group effort.)

Gere exudes rock solid, captivating charm, an illustration of preeminent Libran stage presence that was also evident in Coppola's, "The Cotton Club"* [and fits in Gere's film line up as a show business premonition of things to come.]  However the transits' magical blend with Gere's progressed star chart in 2003 broke acclaim-o-meter records at annual awards events. It's a win-win year for him. "Chicago" is so well loved the company was showered with honors from every quarter, an appropriate record for such a memorable musical collaboration of this caliber. Everyone won. That is theatre!

Progressed Chart for 2003: The progressed Sun entering Scorpio [Silver Screen] pushed all the right buttons for Gere. Perfectly teamed up with "Chicago" release dates and award events, Sun-activated energy poured into Gere's show biz treasure chest in the form of peer recognition and across the board industry appreciation, appearing as blessings from above. Since Gere's star chart is set up to both give and take away simultaneously it may be said some of Gere's best performances have gone unheralded [save the box office, naturally; he receives due  acknowledgement in that department.] Some amount of oversight can be chalked up to the second and tenth house arrangement. It falls into an unusual and somewhat unpredictable category because there are trines by house (2nd house or dept. of life describing employment, values, and fuel to get there~ and the 10th house covering areas such as public image on the world stage, one's mission, and the legacy he leaves) to benefit Gere while friction is created in other departments.

The signs square each other in order to stir up tension and irritation (fuel) and push for decisions about commitment. Always on his mind dept.:  severe competition for Gere's attention and energy units arising from both houses. The effect works for acquisition of the Golden Globe and against a best actor Oscar honor. Saturn (9Virgo21)-Sun (7Virgo54) and Moon (18Sag49)-Vesta (19Sag15) construct the for-against tension in the radix chart. So Gere's progressed Moon in Sagittarius tipped the scales at the time of the nominations; people felt he would win. He won Golden Globe honors as the Sag Moon teamed up with his brilliant, fiery "zone like" actor factor. It is true that the soft shoe should not be confused with soft shoe shufflers - sometimes it works for and other times it works against, the individual aspirant.

Gere is known for risky themes and his roles that string people out [and along: "Primal Fear," "Intersection," and "Red Corner"] so when he dons his song and dance man hat, he admits surprise at each award. North Node [luck, popularity] conjunct TransNeptunian self-discovery fuel in fifth house of drama and theatre benefits, also streamed in the night he won big for "Chicago," a film dedication to the sophisticated white way musical and ultimate in fifth house style and panache. Regulus at the Midheaven power point could not entirely compensate for the square formed by signs Sag-Virgo regardless of the Moon and his Scorpio Sun shift. Gere received dazzling honors from elite groups through nominations, afforded very few actors; his 2003 Golden Globes event marked a golden note for Gere's illustrious repertoire.

SP: Were you warned that this might be a bad career move?

RG: No. Actually, it was my agent who was pushing for it much more than I was. I was a little resistant because I wasn't that taken with the stage production. But my agent just really kept pushing. I had just done a very intense movie, "
Unfaithful", and I thought, At the very least I'm going to have fun doing this.

I started my career doing musicals in New York. So it was very easy for me to work within that medium. In New York I did five or six rock musicals, folk operas, and rock operas. Then I came over here [London] and did "Grease". I was a young man and that was a huge experience for me, both as a person and a performer.

* Christopher Frayling [BBC Online] interview with Francis Ford Coppola

CF:  Which brings us around to The Cotton Club...

FFC:  For me, the most interesting part of The Cotton Club was the theme of the black and white, in so far as the club had the most talented black performers of its day and yet it was segregated and black people couldn't go see the show. It was the hoi polloi, the real high society people who went and I wanted to try something with two worlds, a black world and a white world interweaving between each other and of course meeting at the Cotton Club with the numbers and the shows. There was a kind of Wild West temperament in New York in those days, the twenties, and specifically the gangsters were German-American gangsters, and also of Jewish and Irish descent and historically, they were about to be part of turning over the power to the Italian gangsters in the thirties.

CF:  How interested were you in historical accuracy?

FFC:  I have worked on several films that have used historical information, learning from the master, Mario Puzo. His technique generally is to take from the press archives and records and court records the real facts of these people, but to fudge a little sometimes in the area of combining two characters into one or sometimes moving things that were really happening in 1936 to 1934. I heard people who had actually been there saying "Is that Lulubellle? That's not her! Oh, that didn't happen that way!" But I feel this really is the tenor of the Cotton Club. Maybe it was a little sleazier than I portrayed it, maybe certain people were treated a little more poorly than I showed it, but the themes that are there - of servitude and a desire to use your talent to break out of that servitude into some sort of white world - certainly, that was the truth.

Gere in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES moves waking consciousness into intersections that support and serve as primary "braces" used to stabilize the art form. The engineering design of the big picture construction is found in Wagner's Ring Cycle. Odin, Master of the Nine Worlds of the Norse universe, uses blueprints and the rainbow bridge to walk from Asgard, palace of immortals, into the mortal world.

John Keel said, "Between the IRS, the phone company. . . and flying saucers I was fast becoming a candidate for the funny farm".

Keel received several warnings from unclarified sources. He was told there would be a nation-wide power outage for December 15th. Instead, the Silver Bridge collapsed and took down 31 vehicles and 67 people. There were 46 deaths.

Gere and Linney hold  viewpoints based on the professional training of both their characters. Keel works as a journalist, trained in computer mind digestion of information and Linney, a  policewoman, takes the front door approach in confrontations. Both have their own  perception of the situation, filtered through established, routine scripts.

They are faced with evidence of a mystic image, a symbol of long forgotten mysteries, seen as the  personified, unknown Mothman. Linney's Sun @ 15 Aquarius is conj her Mars and Saturn, similar to Gere's Sun and Saturn pattern.

Linney-Gere teamed up previously for the film,  "PRIMAL FEAR," 1996)  Gere on The Charlie Rose Show talks about "Primal Fear," his life as a Buddhist, and his views of marriage. (5/1/96). Linney has a Capricorn Mercury to add discipline and authority, if speaking in public, on technical and legal points. The aspects all impart the power to stand tall in the courtroom with Gere.

Right Brain Driving with The Mothman

Friday February 22, 2002
The Guardian

....  Imagine driving through the night to discover that you are not where you thought you were; in fact you are hundreds of miles away with no recollection of how you got there. Imagine knocking at the first house you see, only to be greeted by an armed and angry man; you've never seen him before but he accuses you of harassing him on many previous visits. Imagine being drawn into a community frightened by strange encounters with a giant winged humanoid with eyes like saucers, where people have disturbing and accurate precognition of disasters. ....

....   During the early 1960s, investigators were drawn to the Ohio river valley in West Virginia by reports of UFO sightings. Even more bizarre were the associated sightings of huge, winged humanoid creatures which some thought might be alien visitors. Loren Coleman's recent study Mothman and Other Curious Encounters (Paraview, 2002) lists 26 such sightings over 1966-67, corresponding to the period that the original Mothman scared the residents of Point Pleasant, a small town on the West Virginia side of the river, linked to Ohio by the Silver bridge, a prominent landmark. One of those investigators was John Alva Keel, a veteran newspaper and radio reporter with a wide-ranging interest in the occult and UFOs. ....

....  Where Keel recorded a full cast of characters - witnesses, frightened and confused by their other-worldly experiences of Mothman and other "paranormal" experiences - Pellington's film telescopes a whole range of strange phenomena on to a few main characters. While this intensifies the story, it does not ring true to life. However, as Klein investigates, the weirdness seems to toy with him almost as though it were, itself, a living thing or process, leading him on and then confounding him. This is an experience that any investigator into strange phenomena will recognize with a shiver. ....
