Lopez Lomong was six years old when a militia group kidnapped him from a Sudanese church, determined to turn him into a child soldier.
He managed to escape and walk for three days to Kenya. He spent ten years in a refugee camp before finally immigrating to the U.S.
This year, Lopez will compete for the U.S. in the 2008 Olympics. While at the games, he will join Team Darfur, an alliance of almost 400 athletes from around the world raising awareness about Darfur.
Send a message of support to Lopez and his fellow Team Darfur Olympians as they head to Beijing.
One of my all-time favorite albums, this compilation brings together two of the
greatest singing talents ever spawned by 60's television sci-fi. Although their
styles are markedly different, Shatner's dramatic monologue interpretations of
lyrics is in stark contrast to Nimoy's throaty, baritone warbling, both share a
deep, perhaps criminally misunderstood passion for the songs they recorded in
their post-Star Trek heyday. Standouts include Shatner's psychedelic freakout
version of "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and Nimoy's rollicking "Ballad of
Bilbo Baggins" and the curiously compelling "I'd Love Making Love to You"...
... my friend Steve McEveety sent me that I wanted to pass onto you.
Definitely watch the short video at the link below - it is beautiful.
Hi,
My name is Steve McEveety. I am a film producer. I have been blessed to work on some pretty amazing films such as The Passion of The Christ, Braveheart and others. There is a family in my neighborhood that has found the secret to God's love. I asked my daughter Meghan to try and capture this love on film so it could be shared with others. She did and here it is. It will take ten minutes of your day but it will make your day a whole lot better. Feel free to pass it on to a friend or post it on your webpage or do whatever you can to share this beautiful slice of life with a friend.

Convention Fever - Obama-Biden will change the way we elect our public servants
Since I’ve been an independent reader between political lines I thought that someday I would blessed with a choice of candidates to believe in and vote for with a clear conscience. The Obana-Biden ticket takes me on a fantastic, blame-free ride without any of the usual suspect trade offs or obligatory compromises. I’m used to voting for a candidate for whom I feel 70 – 80% enthusiasm, out of a possible 100%. The times they are achangin’.
The election should not be close; this election cycle should recognize new voters who establish a record turn-out. I’m going to be one of those who will make an effort to send out the message to anyone who may still on the fence…. although I cannot imagine where the 11% undecided voter could be at this point.
During my life I have written around ten letters to people in Washington about a variety of subjects, usually to request background information about a detail under the microscope, considered for research, or to assist with a decision. On one
occasion I received a handwritten response. That came from Senator Biden, who took the time to write me a detailed explanation [in pen], on the back of a postcard. The postage was a real stamp, not the office auto-stamp machine. I always remember that when Washington type people tell me they have their ear to the ground so they can stay in touch with what the average American is thinking about. Good choice Senator Obama.
Joe Biden:
"John McCain ... served our country with extreme courage, and I know he wants to do right by America," he said of his Senate colleague and the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"But the harsh truth is loud and clear: You can't change America when you supported George Bush's policies 95 percent of the time."
He also seized on a McCain comment from this week when he could not remember how many houses he owns and said McCain was out of touch with the "kitchen-table" issues that working families face.
"It's a pretty hard experience. He'll have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at," Biden said.
Shortly after the Obama-Biden ticket was announced early Saturday morning, Republican Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana offered praise for his Senate colleague.
Biden says McCain out of touch with "kitchen-table" issues of working class"I have enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy." Lugar said.
Lugar's comments on Biden's bipartisan appeal may hint at a theme the Obama-Biden campaign will highlight in the months to come: We can reach out to GOP and independent voters.
· CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley says Biden is a "very one-on-one person" and "has a personal story as well: triumph over tragedy. ... He brings depth to this ticket."

Good day! I decided not to bend my mind this far, but I find the pattern
fascinating and beautiful.
Surfer dude
stuns physicists with theory of everything
By Roger Highfield, Science Editor
Last Updated:
6:01pm GMT 14/11/2007
An
impoverished surfer has drawn up a new theory of the universe, seen by some
as the Holy Grail of physics, which has received rave reviews from
scientists.
Garrett Lisi, 39, has a doctorate but no university affiliation and spends
most of the year surfing in Hawaii, where he has also been a hiking guide
and bridge builder (when he slept in a jungle yurt).
In
winter, he heads to the mountains near
Lake Tahoe, Nevada,
where he snowboards. "Being poor sucks," Lisi says. "It's hard to figure
out the secrets of the universe when you're trying to figure out where
you and your girlfriend are going to sleep next month."
Despite
this unusual career path, his proposal is remarkable because, by the
arcane standards of particle physics, it does not require highly complex
mathematics.
Even
better, it does not require more than one dimension of time and three of
space, when some rival theories need ten or even more spatial dimensions
and other bizarre concepts. And it may even be possible to test his
theory, which predicts a host of new particles, perhaps even using the
new Large Hadron Collider atom smasher that will go into action near Geneva next year.
Although
the work of 39 year old Garrett Lisi still has a way to go to convince
the establishment, let alone match the achievements of Albert Einstein,
the two do have one thing in common: Einstein also began his great
adventure in theoretical physics while outside the mainstream scientific
establishment, working as a patent officer, though failed to achieve the
Holy Grail, an overarching explanation to unite all the particles and
forces of the cosmos.
Now Lisi,
currently in Nevada,
has come up with a proposal to do this. Lee Smolin at the Perimeter
Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario,
Canada, describes
Lisi's work as "fabulous". "It is one of the most compelling unification
models I've seen in many, many years," he says.
"Although he cultivates a bit of a surfer-guy image its clear he has put
enormous effort and time into working the complexities of this structure
out over several years," Prof Smolin tells The Telegraph.
"Some
incredibly beautiful stuff falls out of Lisi's theory," adds David Ritz
Finkelstein at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. "This must be more than coincidence
and he really is touching on something profound."
The new
theory reported today in New Scientist has been laid out in an online
paper entitled "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything" by Lisi,
who completed his doctorate in theoretical physics in 1999 at the University of California, San Diego.
He has
high hopes that his new theory could provide what he says is a "radical
new explanation" for the three decade old Standard Model, which weaves
together three of the four fundamental forces of nature: the
electromagnetic force; the strong force, which binds quarks together in
atomic nuclei; and the weak force, which controls radioactive decay.
The
reason for the excitement is that Lisi's model also takes account of
gravity, a force that has only successfully been included by a rival and
highly fashionable idea called string theory, one that proposes
particles are made up of minute strings, which is highly complex and
elegant but has lacked predictions by which to do experiments to see if
it works.
But some
are taking a cooler view. Prof Marcus du Sautoy, of OxfordUniversity and author of Finding
Moonshine, told the Telegraph: "The proposal in this paper looks a long
shot and there seem to be a lot things still to fill in."
And a
colleague Eric Weinstein in America added: "Lisi seems like a
hell of a guy. I'd love to meet him. But my friend Lee Smolin is betting
on a very very long shot."
Lisi's
inspiration lies in the most elegant and intricate shape known to
mathematics, called E8 - a complex, eight-dimensional mathematical
pattern with 248 points first found in 1887, but only fully understood
by mathematicians this year after workings, that, if written out in tiny
print, would cover an area the size of Manhattan.
E8
encapsulates the symmetries of a geometric object that is 57-dimensional
and is itself is 248-dimensional. Lisi says "I think our universe is
this beautiful shape."
What
makes E8 so exciting is that Nature also seems to have embedded it at
the heart of many bits of physics. One interpretation of why we have
such a quirky list of fundamental particles is because they all result
from different facets of the strange symmetries of E8.
Lisi's
breakthrough came when he noticed that some of the equations describing
E8's structure matched his own. "My brain exploded with the implications
and the beauty of the thing," he tells New Scientist. "I thought: 'Holy
crap, that's it!'"
What
Lisi had realised was that he could find a way to place the various
elementary particles and forces on E8's 248 points. What remained was 20
gaps which he filled with notional particles, for example those that
some physicists predict to be associated with gravity.
Physicists have long puzzled over why elementary particles appear to
belong to families, but this arises naturally from the geometry of E8,
he says. So far, all the interactions predicted by the complex
geometrical relationships inside E8 match with observations in the real
world. "How cool is that?" he says.
The
crucial test of Lisi's work will come only when he has made testable
predictions. Lisi is now calculating the masses that the 20 new
particles should have, in the hope that they may be spotted when the
Large Hadron Collider starts up.
"The
theory is very young, and still in development," he told the Telegraph.
"Right now, I'd assign a low (but not tiny) likelyhood to this
prediction.
"For
comparison, I think the chances are higher that LHC will see some of
these particles than it is that the LHC will see superparticles, extra
dimensions, or micro black holes as predicted by string theory. I hope
to get more (and different) predictions, with more confidence, out of
this E8 Theory over the next year, before the LHC comes online."

J

a prayer for u
From: Tracie
Dear family and friends,
I just wanted to tell everyone that I am so grateful to have each of you in my life.
I pray you all have a day filled with grace.
It was difficult for me to decide who I thought would DO this because many people claim to pray, but not everyone does. I hope I chose the right twelve. Please send this back to me.
May everyone who received this message be blessed. There are 12 months/12 disciples/12 tribes of Israel/Jesus' birth celebrated in the 12th month.
There is nothing attached.
Just send this to twelve others. Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost, just a lot of reward.
Make sure you pray, and pray believing God will answer.
May today be all you need it to be. May the peace of God and the freshness of the Holy Spirit rest in your thoughts, rule in your dreams tonight, and conquer all your fears.
May God manifest himself today in ways you have never experienced. May your joys be fulfilled, your dreams be closer, and your prayers be answered.
I pray that faith enters a new height for you; I pray that your territory is enlarged. I pray for peace, healing, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, true and undying love for God.
Now send this to 12 people within 5 minutes and remember to send this back...I count as 12.

Scotty is that you?
Tractor beam The Independent writes: Sci-fi geeks love tractor beams. Despite the fact that they're a fictitious method of using a beam
of light either to immobilise or to move an object, one Star Trek fan page goes
into great detail about their powers: "In 2372," it reads, "Lieutenant Commander
Worf of the USS Defiant suggested using a carefully modulated tractor beam
against a Vor'cha-class attack cruiser. It deflected some of the vessel's
disruptor fire and reduced its effectiveness by 50 per cent." But the
development of the microscopic equivalent of tractor beams – known as optical
tweezers – has allowed lasers to be used to pick up and move around individual
cells. This video [d95.com/tractor] shows "DNA knitting" using this technique at
VU University, Amsterdam, and recent work at MIT has used similar methods to
build structures on the surface of microchips. Long term, this could lead to the
development of disease detectors, or biological interfaces with electronics.

Received a GOP email petition in my mailbox asking for signatures to bully Oprah into having Ms. Palin on her show. Last year Oprah announced she did not want political management of the parties to have access.
This is the basic tone of the campaign:
Oprah Winfrey is an example of someone who overcame hardship and stereotypes to become the host of an incredibly successful television talk show. Join us in respectfully asking her to reconsider a public interview with Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. Like Oprah, Ms. Palin has demonstrated great drive and determination to make a difference in the world. Join us requesting that Oprah Winfrey overcome her partisan bias and have Sarah Palin on her show!
What would Oprah do with a guest like Ms. Palin? The lipstick gag is done so what could she discuss with a live interviewer since we already know Ms. Palin doesn't yet know what the Bush Doctrine is?
If you
haven’t had a chance to do so yet, please click the link below to sign our
petition to Presidential Debate moderator Jim Lehrer calling on him to ask
Barack Obama and John McCain “Just ONE Question” on their plans to fight global
poverty.
While there,
you can watch our new video about the campaign. We’ll be delivering all the
petitions next Tuesday, right when Jim Lehrer is choosing the questions he’ll
ask the next President of the United States, so don’t miss your chance to change
the debate and change the future.

Wasilla Watch: Sarah Palin and the
Rape Kits
By DOROTHY SAMUELS
Published: September 25, 2008
Even in tough budget times, there are lines that cannot
be crossed. So I was startled by this tidbit reported
recently by The Associated Press: When Sarah Palin was
mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, the small town began billing
sexual-assault victims for the cost of rape kits and
forensic exams.
Ms. Palin owes voters an explanation.
What was the thinking behind cutting the measly few
thousand dollars needed to cover the yearly cost of
swabs, specimen containers and medical tests? Whose dumb
idea was it to make assault victims and their insurance
companies pay instead? Unfortunately, her campaign is
shielding the candidate from the press, so Americans may
still be waiting for answers on Election Day.
The rape-kit controversy is a troubling matter. The
insult to rape victims is obvious. So is the sexism
inherent in singling them out to foot the bill for
investigating their own case. And the main result of
billing rape victims is to protect their attackers by
discouraging women from reporting sexual assaults.
That’s why when Senator Joseph
Biden, the Democratic
vice-presidential nominee,
drafted the 1994 Violence
Against Women Act, he included
provisions to make states
ineligible for federal grant
money if they charged rape
victims for exams and the kits
containing the medical supplies
needed to conduct them. (Senator
John McCain, Ms. Palin’s running
mate, voted against Mr. Biden’s
initiative, and his name has not
been among the long list of
co-sponsors each time the act
has been renewed.)
