Teach Your Children Well
Class, Family, and Group Project for global prosperity tomorrow: Learn how to grow 'green' and supply family, neighbors, and food banks with fresh produce each week. Food is grown four to eight times faster with hydroponic cultivation, and all nutrients are recycled on a daily basis so cost is minimal.
For example, many green sprouts appear in four to six days [large green beans] rather than a growth rate usually measured in weeks. This is very helpful for third world countries. The hydroponic system only requires seeds, nutrients, and containers trucked into critical or high risk camps. Today, rescue workers must contend with a high cost program that includes bulk food, the soaring cost of fuel, potable water, and security factors. Hydroponics could half the cost of delivery because the containers are used over and over again, and if damaged, are easily replaced with recycled plastic tubs and [for home use] large bottles.
We tried using traditional canning jars and clear water just to see how well the system works. Try this with a couple of canning jars. Just drive a thin nail through each lid several times. Add seeds to the inside of the jar, pour in some water, place the lid back on the jar and pour out the water. Lay the jar on its side overnight. The next day you will have sprouts. This works with alfalfa sprouts for sandwiches and mung beans for egg foo young [both these are overnight or two day sprouts] and they taste great.
If you are facing a problem such as malnutrition, the hydroponic nutrients are going to speed up recovery of the immune system and feed the people who are without anything to eat. Gardening is clean, requires no pesticides, and is extremely easy for first timers.
The benefits of hydroponic gardens may also be extended to reforestation programs in countries with a high forest reduction rate. Hydroponic gardens require only about 20% of the overall space required of soil gardens for the same vegetable production. Trees are can be replaced twice as fast using hydroponic systems and they can be grown close to each other in vertical containers so they "feel like they are with family" when replanted as a group in the forest soil. This is very important for the symbiotic relationship that exists among all the trees in any given forest, particularly where large numbers have been cut down.
It's so easy a child can do it. Read about the new gardening art of Hydroponics, in its simplest form. Grow plants by supplying all necessary nutrients in the plants' water supply rather than through the soil. The word derives from the Greek root words hydro and ponics, meaning water working. Growing plants hydroponically helps gardeners and farmers grow more food more rapidly in smaller areas (greenhouses, living rooms, classrooms, and rooftops, for instance) and to produce food in parts of the world where space, good soil, and/or water are limited.

'Blood Diamond' Stars Speak Out Against World Hunger
"What is so powerful that it can make you overcome your greatest fear, turn your brother into an enemy, and leave wounds that scar long after the fighting is over? What is so potent, it passes effortlessly from mother to child? from generation to generation?"
The answer: "Hunger -- so deadly it kills 25,000 people a day."
These questions are being asked by actors Djimon Hounsou, and Jennifer Connelly, two stars of the film, Blood Diamond, in a new trailer for the World Food Programme (WFP) that will run ahead of the film in cinemas across the world.
"Hunger is bad governance, hunger is need, hunger is poverty, hunger is any number of things," said Edward Zwick, the director of Blood Diamond. "It's the outgrowth of something that is systemic, and when you have in place some system that is not enriching the lives of people whose country is being exploited, that leads to hunger. I think that exists in many areas of Africa, and in other parts of the world."
Zwick continued, "As filmmakers, we want to be accurate and, in so many circumstances, the World Food Programme has been at the centre of refugee camps and present in countries in distress - in Sierra Leone and in other places. So if we, in the context of a movie, can put that image and the knowledge in front of a whole host of people who don't know about it, then we're hopefully doing well by them."
Some of the photographs used in the film trailer are part of a WFP/Benetton campaign launched in 2003, called "Hunger", which featured powerful, intimate photos of war victims, including ex-combatants and amputees.
