LEGEND

JOHN LEE HOOKER
is the blues!

  Star Chart

"I love to sit down and do my thing, you know, because I love the blues," John Lee Hooker told CNN when he was interviewed in September, 2000.

"I was born with the blues, and I just dig it. Nothing else I want to do, and I wouldn't do any-thing else in the world but this."

     ON THE ROAD
to the big festival outside your skull.

While Kerouac and Cassady were buzzing around America's network of traffic lanes,  John Lee Hooker engineered a few inroads of his own.
JLH probably began in his youth and paced himself during a career that evoked admiration and respect from music lovers  across the board. He eventually received a few mainstream awards for his extraordinary work but his influence is felt everywhere.

As a staple San Francisco blues icon comfortable within the 60s rock scene, Hooker worked the international stage,  but in the 1980s, additional skills of the divine crafts-man surfaced and gave him his second wind. His first Grammy Award for his "I'm In The Mood" duet with Bonnie Raitt was followed by the 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

An original  Mississippi Delta blues master who never anchored himself to 'in cement' structuring, Hooker built and opened doors. His customized  performance style does not detach from the past.- He  draws inspiration up through the inner chamber of his Southern roots. His chords and patterning style are unique in this manner. It's one reason why psychic- ally connected musicians of the 60s-70s embraced Hooker's down home wisdom so readily.

Hooker loved to bend sound the way some people endeavor  to bend spoons.
Molded chords and vocals adapt sound frequencies according to audience tone and needs.
Many of Hooker's  exclusive sounds were constructed in recognition of the listeners' call for new ideas and pictures -- and need to be bolstered emotionally.
A born survivor, JLH reformed his edge and highly refined Mercurial capacity-  quicksilver on the face of a quarter.
He would  swiftly determine and match the consistency of any venue's atmospheric mood. He also seemed able to reach through the TV set, out to people watching passively at home.

His trademark songs carry an astonishing jolt, accompanied by a curi-ous state of conscious-ness.

JLH directly or indirectly revitalized EM systems of physical temples within the range of his music. He is a bluesman in the company of poets, songwriters, and philosophers that include King David, Orpheus, and Pythagoras. Many are accredited as 'new age healers,' and  'instant healers'. Harps have a unique, legendary-time-less stature all their own, don't they?

Naturally, the ability to bend sound, said to be both refreshing and hyp-notic by his fans, was
common in the heavily emphasized arcana of ancient mystery schools. Southern equivalents of this belief are foundational for Genesis ("the word") and were possibly introduced to JLH  by his preacher father at a very early age.

It is reasonable to assume that, with a little digging, we could dis-cover template links to secure the parallel truths. The real power comes from within and this is clear witnessing JLH onstage.
Perhaps even a personification of these themes could be put together in the person of 'blues chantress' - song-writer Bonnie Raitt,  with poetic magic of her own?
Joining Raitt as guests for JLH's THE HEALER, we hear takes on this turn from guitarists Robert Cray and Carlos Santana.

Tulsa Blues Festival Poster featuring
John Lee Hooker and Elvin Bishop

John Lee Hooker’s exciting, regal ‘alpha’ star, Regulus, entertained his sizzlin' solar destiny from the day of his birth. Officially this event is reckoned as August 22, 1917. The place, in the heartland of rich blues-loam, is itself a legend, Clarksdale, Mississippi. Hooker’s Leo Sun, exactly conjunct Regulus within a degree of perfect, predicted highly acclaimed contributions to innovative blues and traditional American music, as well as the music synonymous with his name, ‘boogie.’ Hooker’s hard working repertoire enchants listeners with smooth blended original standards, including "Boogie Chillen," his first single in 1948.

Although Hooker kept pace with changing times during his career, he remained flexible and vigilant simultaneously, earning the respect of musicians coming up in the industry.

"John Lee Hooker is unique in that he is an ambassador from another time," Charles Shaar Murray says in an interview. "His style is so archaic and so firmly rooted that he fulfilled this function almost from the onset of his career. And he's a speaker for eternal verities of the human condition."

Hooker continually refined and polished augmented work, addressing his established phrases as subtle and encompassing designs, much like the cross section of a nautilus shell. His stepfather Will Moore initially introduced him to the guitar.

During the course of his travels Hooker's playing was influenced by blues legends such as Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake. (Hooker's star chart  represents early contact with music legends: Sol/Regulus – contact with greatness- Regulus means 'the little king.')

For decades, Hooker remained an established ambassador for a unique American genre, reminiscent of the ol’ Mississippi mud and sharecroppers in the South. But his foot stompin’ beat keeps people stoking. Once on the movers-and-shakers map in 1948, John Lee Hooker acquired his most familiar foundational social title, ‘father of the boogie.’

Secret source of Hooker’s fine sensibilities and incredible style?  JLH dug into the essential, elemental powers realized through humble beginnings. His star chart aptly categorizes these wisdom perceptions as an impressive grouping of heavenly bodies active within the constellation Virgo. Associated with measured units and time, healing, initiation, theurgy*, and (Sting’s ‘lithium’) sunset, Virgo is linked with rewards at the end of the day  and harvest.

The world was his school. At a pivotal moment, Hooker moved to Memphis and took a day job so he could play music at night.

Historically, commanding power archetypes stem from simple surroundings. Some cultures say, ‘The simpler, the better!’ and formulate response to the presence of such people (Moses, Jesus, Joan of Arc) based on non-demanding specs.**

Hooker could manage the translation of soul rhythms into musical phrase and time, a potential gift referenced in his star chart under headings:

o   Sun and Regulus @ 28 Leo 40 conjunct Apollo @ 29 Leo  In star chart terms,  fame would find John Lee Hooker regardless of terrestrial locale, and guarantee his name a place among the biggest and brightest in the world of music. In 1997, John Lee received two Grammy Awards for his latest studio release, DON'T LOOK BACK. The first Grammy was for Best Traditional Blues Album and the second for his duet with Van Morrison. [right column for more]

o   Poseidon @ 23 Virgo conjunct Mercury and Athena together @ 26 Virgo treats Hooker's solar aspect with charming luster. The fame intimated by Leo is carried on by virtue of the next zodiacal sign Virgo, The Virgin. As an example of intellectual word-stamp links, Hooker's classic 1999 compilation, THE BEST OF FRIENDS on Virgin / Pointblank, celebrates his 50th recording year.

The album features performances with John Lee and many of his friends including Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, Robert Cray, Ben Harper, Los Lobos, Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmie Vaughan and more.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

"...His foot-stomping boogie was adapted and amplified in the Sixties and Seventies by a great number of rock and roll artists, including the Rolling Stonesthe Yardbirds, Canned Heat, John Mayall, Ten Years After, Foghat, ZZ Top and George Thorogood.

…. Over the decades, he has proven to be a survivor. When interest in electric blues began cooling off, Hooker found a niche for himself on the coffeehouse circuit during the acoustic folk-music boom of the late Fifties and early Sixties. More recently, his career has enjoyed a sustained resurgence that included a Grammy award for his 1989 album The Healer."

THE HEALER ~ Should anyone wonder when Hooker enjoyed his  progressed Mars in Virgo debut vibes @ 0 degrees, he assumed the garment of the earth mysteries in 1989. The curtain went up on Hooker's new Mars with his Sun moving over Mercury in Scorpio in a sweltering combust aspect. Implications that follow suggest his initial projects in 1988-89 would continue to bear fruit, bring additional trophies, and summon new adventures into the world of film and video.]

"For musicians and common people - all of us feel enormous gratitude, respect, admiration and love for his spirit. When I was a child, he was the first circus I wanted to run away with. Working with him is something that I will deeply treasure".
-Carlos Santana [guest musician on The Healer (1989)
and Chill Out (1995)]

*   Ceres (Virgo) would oversee festivals and rites. She presided at competitions for poets and in dramatic contests, as well as  plays for initiation of the general  public. Two kinds of plays for greater and the lesser spiritual mysteries were treated as national events. Neoplatonists following Julianus (1st century B.C.) conceived of theurgy as acting on God or in a godly fashion, which meant raising the being to the level of the higher genius temporarily and having an epiphany of awareness.

**  Later on, those figures advance into power arenas where they are evaluated on the basis of their point of origin. Today, our fictional heroes - Bilbo and Frodo Baggins - and our newfound transmediums Neo (Mr. Andersen), Morpheus, and Trinity - or even boy wizard, Harry Potter - all have one thing in common. They were not born in grand & golden palatial surroundings, and they still expect to access  information/knowledge as though they hail from opulent early influences. It’s called ‘Street Smart’ when you’re from the South. The use of alternate jackets (Aragorn as the ranger Strider) does not necessarily involve an alter-ego (Clark Kent & Superman, Diana Prince & Wonder Woman, etc.) Hooker estimated he had recorded over a hundred albums under different names... not to be confused with "Masked and Anonymous."

Sun in Scorpio ~ Bonnie Raitt
"Goddess of The Windpipe" is an ancient title for Isis. Her formal hieroglyph is the throne although she has many epithets. Considered the most important initiator (sought by Pythagoras), she performs as the Goddess of Engineers and Exorcists (golden insights in the system related to musical measurement and ritual.)  Sacred art portrays Isis with a musical implement, a sistrum, that appears to be a cross between a tambourine and a rattle. Deeper mysteries designed to dispel evil (non-active akasha or stagnant energy) urge  circulation of life forces gently. Bonnie's music videos also tend to visually pick up on that mood and beat.

By vigorously moving the metal sistrum, the atmosphere is unblocked and returns to smooth flowing status. Now we disburse jammed energy by opening doors and windows to "let the air in" or perhaps by smudging. Instead of  sound/movement generated by a sistrum we use fire with herbs,  to smooth smoke into corners with  stagnant energy. The little cylindrical metal tool Bonnie uses when she plays guitar is linked with the Chantress of The Ambassador Goddess Hathor (associated with Bonnie's reflex sign, Taurus, The Winged Bull.)
