From an interview with SCA King Jade of Starfall. He discusses the international historical society and recent films Gladiator, Troy, and Kingdom of Heaven: Kove: Have you been inspired by any of the movies that are out about the Middle Ages or any of these periods and subjects you’ve studied?King Jade of Starfall: I’ve studied classical history, too, so both Gladiator and Troy, in recent times, in terms of classical movies, really inspired me a lot. They inspired me for very different reasons. It’s very interesting to me. Gladiator was an amazingly popular movie, but I think I understand why Gladiator was put on this incredible pedestal of success…
Gladiator was almost universally loved. In Gladiator, all of the characters were archetypes. They were perfect representations of a particular power, or a particular energy, or a particular concept. You know Maximus was the flawless, perfect hero. He was iconic in all ways…
Roman amphitheater - the coliseum He is perfectly heroic in the way that he fights. He’s forced to defend himself and fight in the arena; but he not only takes no pleasure in it or joy in it, he spits and curses at the people who are cheering him on. Because it’s not a heroic way for him to use his skills and he knows it. Even in that moment as much as people love him for the entertainment, they also are forced to realize he does it because he’s a slave at the time, not because it’s what he chooses. Crowe has his Sun in Aries, associated with the Greek ammos (sand), believed to be related to Ammon [see Aries and The Insider below]. The Latin word for sand is, arena. Latin harena, arena, was the place of combat (literally 'place strewn with sand'). The arena was the area in the center of the coliseum where Maximus eventually took on the Emperor in a life-death spectacle. Both men fought like rams with locked horns and only one could be victorious. | |||

Cenä Bene - DINE WELL
Dining in Rome was sweetness and light for the upper crust of society, and if we can believe the visuals Fellini gave us, culinary appreciation was an art form for many of those with power. The Roman Army was an austere group, and approached life from the other end of the food chain. Their menu consisted mainly of bread and water, as suggested in opening scenes from 'Gladiator.' Maximus gives his portion of bread to a solider in the line while on his troop review prior to the opening battle.
JOIN THE ARMY AND SEE THE WORLD Soldiers in the Roman Army subsisted on a diet made up of very plain foods. Soldiers were required to pay up to one third of their wages for their food. They ate mostly bread, perhaps porridge, cheese or beans with cheap wine to wash it down (Marks, Tingay 16). Dupont says that a soldier's diet was even more extremely limited. She reports that Legionaries ate only bread and drank only water plus a little vinegar when the weather was hot. It was considered that "bread was the only food fit for a soldier, hard food for hard men"(Dupont 125).
Many European sites held sacred for centuries were transformed into grain storehouses by Roman militia, even burial mounds. In Scotland I saw an underground chamber with the same dimensions as a medium size house. The Roman cavalry converted the whole site from a burial place into a huge grain store for their horses. It is no wonder the Cumean and Delphi Sibyls decided to close until the military era runs its course. But while the Roman military ate like desert prophets and conquered the world, the mighty and powerful in the big city feasted on victuals and other delights imported from conquered nations. (On the basis of the 'Spartacus' legend, one could assume the slaves picked up on the twisted incongruity and benefits of bread and water rations, to the point they followed suit and nearly took Rome themselves.) Slaves garnered pearls of wisdom. The wealthy Romans attending a sumptuous banquet might have harvested pearls, precious stones, even gold, given as gifts to the guests. These keepsakes were hidden in the colourful dishes and the culinary centerpiece. Serving the main course usually coordinated with musicians and poets who performed during the course(s) of a meal, was considered the highlight of the evening, before the after dinner entertainment started.

Chris Matthews "Hardball"
interview Cinderella Man heavyweight champ James J. Braddock June 10, 2005 MATTHEWS: When you're boxing, and you've trained, and you've done the research to know what boxing is all about, and you're out there, I can see being a boxer for one or two rounds, but it seems to me after you've out there a couple of times, been hit a couple of times hard, your I.Q. is dropping pretty low. I mean, your sense of where you are, what you're doing, any sense of strategy is gone. What's going on in the head of a boxer going into the late rounds, the double-digit rounds? I mean, you're playing this guy. Those are the best scenes in the movie, I thought, the real action. CROWE: Well, see, Angelo Dundee [trained me] MATTHEWS: That was Muhammad Ali's guy. CROWE: Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Willie Pastrano, Carmen Basilio— he's had 15 world champions. He built in me the ability to keep going, to keep my head clear no matter how much punishment I was taking, and, you know, no matter how deep you're dragging for a breath. And that's the whole key to it. If you can keep your head clear, you can keep going forward. Angelo didn't teach me to see everything that I needed to see, because he can tell me that, you know? What he taught me was how difficult it was to keep going when you're in the situation where you've lost the ability to breathe, you know, and you've taken quite a bit of punishment. And that's what he taught me.
Chris Matthews "Hardball"
interview Cinderella Man heavyweight champ James J. Braddock MATTHEWS: What I loved about the movie was the violence. You say you're against violence. I loved it in the movie. CROWE: But it's also boxing. It's a sport. MATTHEWS: That guy you fought, Max Baer, was one of the great bad guys. He was funny. CROWE: He was really good, wasn't he? MATTHEWS: And yet, at the end of it, you touched gloves. CROWE: Yes, because it's a sport. If we don't go to a certain level of reality— boxing is a guy in shorts and a guy in shorts and a defined area, you know? And somebody's going to get humiliated tonight by the end of this gig. It's a really tough sport that requires an incredible amount of courage. But if we don't go to the reality of the violence of the sport, then we're not really telling you the story. And particularly in those times as well, there was a lot of things that they used to get away with, because, you know, a different kind of coverage with cameras and stuff like that, which boxers don't get away with now. And we tried to illustrate that, tried to illustrate the boxing at the time. But, you know, Ron Howard has said a number of times that—apart from that aspect, apart from the athletic aspect of Braddock, that this is the closest character to who I am that I've ever played.

* See the visual Aries/Leo power of Crowe's subtle energy [Leo is the reflex sign for Aquarius] The Karnak Temple Avenue of Sphinxes flanks the entrance of the First Pylon of Karnak Temple. Combine the body of a lion [Leo/Aquarius] with the head of a ram [Aries/Libra.] The ram was a symbol of the god Amun for whom the temple was built. Each sphinx protects, between its forelegs, a standing statue of the king--originally Ramesses II (c.1279-1213 B.C.E.) The Summer Solstice was probably aligned with this route [sign Leo]. Today the Sun [Leo] is exalted in the sign Aries [the Ram] and is the power in back of Spring Equinox renewal.

Russell Crowe has a dual role in the world of mortals as a shaman and chief. People will always depend on him to provide leadership, set the tone in a world of harsh controversy [Cinderella Man], or challenge unjust conditions. His straightforward, independent personality is based on his belief in the rights of all people [especially himself.] Soul power development is another high priority. Legal [The Insider] and karma lessons [LA Confidential, A Good Year] generate the acutely serious conflicts, especially when it is necessary to work with people unsure of their own identity or who do not believe in themselves. The connection between several words: 'Aries,' 'Amon,' and 'ammonia,' should be noted by fans of The Insider: Only Russell Crowe* could have carried the story so well. His Aquarian character holds together the light and dark side of the modern laboratory, and an Aries link-up with the ancient science provides a deeper presentation about the impact of treated tobacco:
"Many think that
our figure [Aries] was designed to
represent the Egyptian King of Gods shown at Thebes with
ram's horns, and variously known as
Amon, Ammon, Hammon,
Amen, or Amun, and
worshiped with great ceremony at his temple in the oasis
Ammonium, now Siwah, 5° west of Cairo on
the northern limit of the Libyan desert [Libya was a term
for the African continent]. The ram figures prominently in
biblical stories about the ancient figure of the patriarch,
the legend of the Argo and search for the Golden Fleece, and opening year ceremony of the Native American
Indian.

APR 1940 -- 11:02 am Manhattan Beach, NY
Crowe can accurately pick up thought patterns and is sensitive to anyone with a chaotic imagination. In numerology, four expresses the result of action, the fruit of the toil typified by three. It is the realization from effort, and it is life springing into manifestation as the result of the union of polar opposites. It thus represents the practical, the concrete, and consequently that which has form. It becomes the type of the universal truth of reality, indicating that each realm is actual when viewed from its own plane. It is also the practical as applied to everyday affairs. The power of The Emperor Trump IV lives within the ideal ratio between Mars and the Moon, as cultivated by Crowe in his role as James J. Braddock in, Cinderella Man. In the macrocosm the four vibration signifies the result of motion; in man it is the knowledge culled from experience. In science it relates to all those laws which govern the effective use of energy - to those which govern what is produced by motion. Russell Crowe's strong moral code brings home his directness as 'righteous.' He is trustworthy and ethical because he will not preach what he does not practice. Leaders also balance action with what they ask of others by first learning to follow before they lead. Crowe has "worked on" his communication skills so they operate like a high performance Jaguar that isn't really designed for street use. Those who fail to play fair also find Crowe difficult to interact with [Cinderella Man] due to their lack of personal integrity. The most important questions may circle themes concerning 'the quest' - not far from some of the issues portrayed in Master and Commander.
Courageous soul powers always fascinate people and Crowe has them. His birth date and name add up to the vital numbers associated with the four points of the compass so you know he is playing with a full deck. Sometimes he is Mr. Instant Karma, the worst nightmare for the adversary [Proof of Life] when negotiation clock time has ticked to off. Crowe can work both sides of the metaphysical street and shapeshift to the role of initiator when he feels the time is right. There is no problem when he is in the zone. He will usually select his crew, 'mates' and spokespeople with circumspect consideration to guarantee some degree of equilibrium. Those who read the paper know his 'gift' can be a lightning rod in inclement weather. Naturally, this is subject to modification because of the transits and Crowe's progressed star chart. The number 1 [Crowe] is the magician, shaman, and entrepreneur. When the 1 vibration is combined with a 4 destiny path, the pattern suggests infinity in some context. There are signs and portents of the liberator [the Moses model like Crowe characters in, L.A. Confidential, The Insider, Gladiator, and Proof of Life], and high chief [depression-era heavyweight champ James J. Braddock.] Crowe is destined to deliver vital information as a storyteller in front of the camera and perhaps as a director/producer some day. His intuitive, telekinetic, and empathic skills hold the key to audience appreciation. Crowe marches to the beat of a different drummer, and keeps time with the music so he's interesting to watch. He brings his audience to new vistas, opens locked doors with eye candy, and shows people the secret of personal power - truth. Today, people want to discover new spiritual, intellectual, and emotional terrain [A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander] or experience esoteric illumination [The Insider] in advanced schools [A Beautiful Mind] of thinking. We love to color outside the lines and Russell Crowe demonstrates the way to accomplish that with the best possible form. The 4 vibration is the number of the “Earth” as terra firma, a rock solid vibration symbol of the standing order. Crowe won the Oscar for best actor in 2001 and his own audience along with it. Gladiator gave Crowe an opportunity to show his range as a performer. His ‘blood, sweat, and tears’ performance as Maximus, the faithful general of Marcus Aurelius [Richard Harris] won our hearts.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the “five
good emperors” of Rome. The first scenes of the movie provide us with an
ideal example of the correct relationship between the philosopher and the
general. We watch Crowe relate to his environment [world] the same way,
wherever he is, regardless of his station in life, with respect for the
ground where he stands. He always takes up a small bit of the land so he
can move in sync with the energy of the place. So few people understand
the order of natural law these days! Fans continue to buy DVDs long after
the number fetishists have released their break down of box office
figures.
Crowe's Star Chart for 2001 A moment
for Gladiator: What is the Nadir? The Nadir is the cusp of the
fourth house in a star chart. It governs domestic matters, transmigration
of souls, the grave, kiva, and deep level rebirthing experiences - predominate
features on the mind of Crowe's character in "Gladiator." This part of the
psyche is naturally governed by the cyclic Moon, [governor of birth,
death, and rebirth cycle] - the key to the general's adaptive survival
techniques. Note that Crowe's 2001 star chart progressions, constructed
for his birthday, map out an extraordinary Lunar conjunction. His Moon @
17 Gemini covered this inner plane access door [Nadir @ 17 Gemini] leading
to fascinating deeper consciousness. Acceptance into the collective consciousness and
return to the Absolute occurs on the other side of this door. In truth, we
all reach this door when we enter a level 8 sleep state, but forget the
experience when we wake. When we view the door in "Gladiator" we glimpse
the possibility Maximus will reunite with his
waiting family. Crowe projects the dominant sway of this
motivational psyche seat of power, "the doorway" just before him, so
left, deep tunnel at We enjoy the same kind of experience [the kiva mindset] in, "A Good Year," when Crowe's character dusts off several gold nuggets rediscovered during a deep level recall-cognition sequence. He descends the stairs to his uncle's estate wine cellar and recollects the 'laboratory' process, surrounded by a cache of old wine barrels. This kiva is about 'pressing the wine' - the harvest of grain and the vine. This extraction of value involves selection of the good from all experiences by discerning the fruit from the dross. The attendant sickle represents metamorphosis [the new patriarch of the family replaces the uncle [Albert Finney] who was mentor and benefactor. The theme runs parallel to Crowe's first house Saturn. During the Golden Age, Saturn was an incarnate king of peace and prosperity, vast fields of wheat and fatted cattle, an engineer with the cornucopia as a symbol of his reign. Later, Saturn was deified as the Lord of Time, Mysteries of the Spiritualized Terrestrial, and the Taskmaster [judge] of the zodiac.
The armies of Rome swept over Italy and the known
world and were triumphant wherever they went. Yet Rome was cosmopolitan;
she brought to Italy the culture, the treasures, the entertainments, the
religions, and philosophies of the world. In such an atmosphere even the
exotic became commonplace, while the search for new pleasures and
sensations was the order of the day.
- Jack Randolph Conrad, The Arenas of Rome,
I thought it [Gladiator] was terrific. Crowe gave a great performance, and the film was really moving on so many levels. I think one of the reasons it's so good is that we have gone so far with big action movies that they're all gadgetry; and now we're suddenly back to the basics of good story and character. -Sean Connery
Aries, The Ram
Russell Crowe is a double Aquarius with his Sun in the fire sign Aries. He makes it up as he goes along and basically constructs the road while he's walking on it. Saturn, traditionally the external parent with 'real world rules' and their legacy, as the engineer/architect, is deposited in Crowe's Ascendant. The tone of Vesta, the eternal flame also blends with Aquarius at this point in his star chart to emphasize the Air-Fire electrical characteristic of his personality he tends to study on the big screen. As Dr. Jeffrey Wigand, the 'ultimate' research-executive authority on the subject of substance 'enhancement' - THE INSIDER - Crowe plays a corporate VP-scientist fighting to retain his integrity in a world dominated by sales statistics. Aquarius most represents new age concerns we share about health problems plaguing our global village. Aquarius is the mundane world's white coated 'super scientist' we equate with the discovery of new safety features in every day life - a better mousetrap mentality. The
theory in metaphysics is about pendulum movement, an art really, taught to
help a master maintain balance through a complete cycle of movement, from
beginning to end. Whether a pendulum is moving forward [waxing, gaining
momentum] or in the opposite direction [calling up opposition forces and
erosion] the master remains at the centre of power [in the zone] and in
equilibrium within the established paradigm. Herbert Marcuse, inspired
mentor for Lowell Bergman, the 60 Minutes producer who pushed for
the whistle-blower segment on the show, is honored as Bergman's
transparent guide. Marcuse taught that this free speech society grants
that freedom and right to speak creatively, only when the pendulum swings
back and begins to cross the median line into the movement's
deconstruction zone. Brief http://www.thediviningnation.com/course.htm

Aquarius also carries with it, as do all the bi-polar expressions in a created world, a minus heading, possibly associated with John Barrymore as he changes from Dr. Jeckyl into Mr. Hyde. The silent films loved the theme of good vs. evil as did early talkies when Dr. Frankenstein exclaimed, "It's alive! It's alive!" For most of us pedestrian folk, Aquarius is thought of as the sign of special effects media, advertisement, and new world entertainment delivery, like video tape, CDs, and DVD, as well as the computer production of movies per se. Most obvious associations with the industry include the director and producer [see THE INSIDER for more on this function in television broadcasting] and activities related to shoots, screen plays by poets and writers, musical score composition and performer-vocalists. Crowe's actions and opinions are structured with the discipline of Saturn and the passion of Vesta. At some point in his future he will direct and/or produce successfully. Only Aquarius and Aries protest doing anything in a way that someone else has already tried. Needless to say, such individuals are constantly challenged. In the immortal words of Marcus Aurelius, [Richard Harris, Gladiator] "There is always someone left to fight." The Sun is exalted in Aries; virtue, valor, and nobility are Sol's three chief signatures attributed to the life of the native when a positive Sun dons the Aries garment. Thinking and feeling of Aries is based on an acute desire to possess [or "to own" one's karma] so the thought of the goal is always central to the line of vision. The most inspirational role models we have, during the era of chivalric orders, such as The Society of The Golden Fleece, demonstrated a classic courage associated with this sign. Another reference to the Golden Ram is the story of Jason and the Argonauts, alluding to the 'innate mystical character' layered within the fiery symbol of Aries. Lucky Jack Aubrey may have been inspired by someone deep into his psyche, perhaps an ancestor or clan elder Crowe draws from - for Crowe seemed to find a second home on the open sea. Aries begins and closes the zodiac; where the circle is completed and the cycle of one life ends in the start of another. When the Sun crosses the first point of Aries the astronomical year commences, and when it again crosses into Aries, that year is ended, and closure takes place. Aries indicated by this cycle, is Brahma as well as Siva - both creator and destroyer.
Aquarius will be the second person to raise his hand when Goliath calls out his challenge. Aquarius has to process intellectual ramifications first. These days Goliath is often masked and anonymous, hidden inside a three piece pin-stripped corporate suit. [See Proof of Life, terribly underrated film; Crowe's character reveals Aries in the sign's most independent mode of action. Aquarius Moon folk pull back emotionally so they can get an intellectual hold on the overview - in most situations they need the whole picture before they feel prepared to take action.]
Speaking of 'beautiful mind' groundbreakers, the star chart for John
Forbes Nash, Jr. enjoys a few resonant Aries chords. Common notes
arise here primarily via the daring roll of
multi-dimensional sojourner, well known for going "where no one has
gone before." Not recommended for the inter-galactic tourist with a
weak heart. It is obvious within circles dedicated to metaphysical
research, that Nash didn't realize he was opening doors that lead to
higher octave aeythers through experimental math formulae. Crowe
portrayed Nash carefully so as to conceal what Nash did understand about
the road he was on without letting the cat out of the bag. We do know when
Nash realized he found a mathematical template to access the
aeythers - when he cognized they weren't aging along with
him.
Nash [Aries Midheaven] is seen as a 'prophet' with an Aries legacy for anyone eager to follow in his footsteps. His Gemini Sun is the lighting force ruled by Mercury associated with curiosity. His questions are filed in a little alcove labeled 'the profound,' somewhere in the back of everyone's mind. The MC angle is covered by his Moon, Mars, Vesta, and [Crowe's Aquarius Ascendant planet ruler, Uranus.] They all express through Aries in Nash's star chart, an easy energy field for Crowe to convert so audiences can appreciate the singular brilliance of a pure discovery. With no road it's the equivalent of a Marques of Queensbury boxing match out there... just about... like The Insider, the first man of a Fortune 500 Company who wanted justice enough to chance life as a Kentucky high school teacher earning 30,000 a year.
Boundless space is a big place to play - an issue for an Aries or an Aquarian to dine on, as we see in the wide screen sea adventure, Master and Commander, in theatres November 15, 2003. ILM Link When time permits, see another film by Peter Weir that features the layered universe, The Last Wave.

Russell Crowe's Star Chart for November 15, 2003 On opening night Crowe's progressed Sun @ 25 Taurus 20 was exactly sextile his progressed Moon @ 25 Moonchild [Cancer] 20, establishing a perfect vehicle for his "Lucky Jack Aubrey" navy captain-father-brother character in Master and Commander. This Sun to Moon aspect [60 degrees] is one of the most fortunate auguries possible for financial prospects, popularity, and professional assent, not that RC needs any help up to the Crowe's nest. The sextile aspect dominates Crowe's star chart throughout 2003 in various ways. Mercury @ 2 Taurus 41 sextile his Venus @ 3 Moonchild 45 summons all these engaging social planets can add to embellish an already sunny outlook. The implied change of residence materialized both on and off screen. As if he doesn't want to be outdone by Lucky Jack's exotic ports of call from Brazil to the fantastic Galapagos Islands, Crowe transferred his own captain's quarters to a new Sydney waterfront abode valued at nearly $10 million clams. Mercury-Venus augments the Sun-Moon aspect because they function in the same signs, so Master and Commander is our ticket to deep water unknowns [Sun-Moon adventure] while we remain safe and dry in theatre deck chairs [Mercury-Venus] just this side of Jonah's initiation [Neptune 16 Scorpio conjunct Crowe's ninth house cusp.] We have the distinct feeling we are part of an extended family, living in a sea worthy home, on an assignment for King and country [North Node conjunct Venus in the fourth house of national pride and duty sextile to Mercury.] Since the Moon entered Crowe's fifth house in late August/early September, news of new projects for the versatile thespian are probably in the wings!
