There is an old tale goes that
Herne the hunter,
Sometime a keeper here in Windsor Forest,
Doth all the winter-time, at still midnight,
walk round about an oak, with great ragg'd horns,
And there he blasts the tree, and takes the cattle,
And makes milch-kine yield blood,
and shakes a chain
In a most hideous and dreadful manner.
-William Shakespeare
The Merry Wives of Windsor
In British folklore
ancient, hollow trees called bull oaks in England, bell oaks in Scotland
and Ireland are trees that stood in old sacred groves. They were
believed to be the home of spirits, elves, fairies or demons. You were
supposed to turn your coat or cloak inside out to neutralize their
magic:
Turn your cloaks
For fairy folks
Are in old oaks.

The New Adventures of
Robin Hood, Christopher Lee as "Olwyn" one of Merlin's followers, in
episode: "The Auction" (episode # 3.13) 13 December 1998
Robin Hood and his band of outlaws which includes Marian, Little John, and Friar Tuck, rob from the rich and give to the poor as they fight against Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and all other manner of evil people and creatures. Magic plays as much a part as the sword and the arrow.
Once Merlin had made a
prophecy to Arthur that another good man would help England. A couple
hundred years later, one of Merlin's followers named Olwyn (Christopher
Lee) finds a boy of nobility named Robert (Matthew Porretta/John
Bradley) who's full of hate at the men who killed his father. From this
a new legend is born and from the bitter lad grows a strong leader who
fights for the common man. With him are Little John (Richard Ashton),
Friar Tuck (Martyn Ellis), and of course, Maid Marion (Anna
Galvin/Barbara Griffin) whom he is always denying his feelings for. They
protect all from taxes, tyranny, and black magic.
