The seven hills of San Francisco, core spiritual power of the Haight-Ashbury, are The City's unshakeable  underpinnings, facilitating mystical undercurrent in back of, behind, and underneath visual patches of geography inside Hashbury. The emotional feel of The Haight is akin to Columbus Circle in New York City, where at least 13 water lines converge. The Haight also has an overwhelmingly powerful solar intersection @ Haight between Cole and Shrader ~ renown Straight Theatre site.

60s Cultural  Revolution

Roughly sixteen square city blocks in size, the Haight-Ashbury is technically bound on the north by Fulton Street with Jefferson Airplane's landmark black-gold mansion [now classic ivory-white.] The southern edge at Buena Vista Park and east area along Divisadero Street is connected to the ancient Temple of Saturn, similar in frequency and ambiance to the last scene of The Matrix Revolutions, a smoky quartz vibration. The entry park to Haight territory represents the treaty Neo established between The Architect and The Oracle. In alchemical terms, The Architect is lead ore and The Oracle is copper. During the Summer of Love phenomena, many structures were formulated in California [and the world over] based on a perfect binary solution for Venus and Saturn.

"But just as the work of transforming lead into gold was in many cases a chemical symbolism for a spiritual transformation of man himself, so the immortality to be conferred by the elixir was not always the literally everlasting life but rather the transportation of consciousness into a state beyond time."  - Alan Watts

Astrologers prepared for dramatic aspects to effect California, and specifically Los Angeles, during 1965 and 1966. The good news concerned future oriented movements in California, far ahead of everyone else in America. Certain dynamics for a new vision,  for the coming century especially, were based on the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto in Virgo. Virgo is the zodiacal sign California and L.A. were "born" under, so most astrologers expected an extreme energy shift. The bad news involved the possible earthquake, towering inferno, or part of the coastline breaking off* and falling into the Pacific Ocean.

Several paranormal events have been verified in early Haight, south of Masonic, common within the traditional pre-quake Victorian blueprint. In many respects, the structure of the phenomena is akin to serial North Beach installments, fundamental to the Bohemian lifestyle of many Golden Gate poets, artists, and filmmakers. San Francisco landmark homes of Big Brother and the Holding Company, at the corner of Page & Broderick, the Grateful Dead on Ashbury, Jefferson Airplane on Divisadero and later Fulton, and The Charlatans, are exemplary of modern style cultivated in vibrant San Francisco ambiance. Stain glass door and window remnants, and traditional hand carved wood embellishments of classic pre-quake City life, still endure as examples of "real" San Francisco history.

A tone of the prevailing pilgrim mindset during America's search for El Dorado, Utopia, and Shangri La increased  after the loss of Camelot. The Seven Ancient Temples of San Francisco [SF2 page] provide basic energy management maps of Northern California. San Francisco is the key. Built on seven ancient hills, in keeping with Le Plongeon's [and others] theory, the City energy grid corresponds with myths, prophecy, and rumors that re-surfaced in the Edgar Cayce readings. Predictions include Atlantis rising, in sync with 60s Virgo* planetary alignment, and suggest San Francisco may be a post-Lemurian, Mayan, or Atlantean site. Several points of evidence support the theory that the West Coast of the United States once belonged to a different land mass. Hopi and Havasupai believe the phenomenon is handed down from Anasazi ["people of the blue-green waters."]
These Native American legends are two thousand years old.

Descendents of the Anasazi [Ancient Ones] predicted an underground West Coast culture thread would be stimulated during the cultural changes, prompting both physical and spiritual exchanges with the Hopi near the Grand Canyon. Hollywood picked up on the influence [Easy Rider] and infused the high soul powers of Native Americans in some provocative movie scripts in the current millennium. The link/prophecy that binds Mt. Shasta in Northern California with The Sacred Mountain in Arizona is also evident in the Strawberry Hill locale, above the waterfalls, looking out to the ocean. The power of the Strawberry Hill Deva [Temple dedicated to Neptune/Poseidon, the Earth Shaker] is transformative, an experience to be absorbed first hand. The event is both internal and objective. The environment feels like a place designed for earthquake prediction. Recognition of our interdependence with the nature world via second sight activates psyche  ties with sacred animals known for sensitivity to land tremors, such as horses. The feeling strongly resembles the presence of the shaman in the caves at Lascaux, France.

Golden Gate Park provides the western border of the mystic triangle in San Francisco. The Children's Park & carousel have always been favorites. The Stanyon path leads straight to the Golden Gate Park Carousel with its rare prancers, jumpers, and museum quality chariots. Lest we forget, Summer of Love local bands opened The Carousel Ballroom during the last half of the decade. Hippie Hill, the Polo Field, and Strawberry Hill are within this sector. Haight Street has always attracted the shaman, elf, and mage. During the cultural revolution, members of the extended community [hobbits, dwarves,  (orcs - sometimes known as blue meanies), and other races] were drawn to San Francisco for unique, varied, and sundry reasons. Haight-Ashbury mystic, author, and magus, Ophiel, penned books about astral projection and creative visualization, two of them published in the mid-60s, when he lived in his Page Street hideaway a block from Haight Street. True to his reclusive hermit character, Ophiel welcomed those who knocked on his door though he was rarely seen in public - classic Saturn-Jupiter social behavior.

The mystique that begins at Market Street, well known for various space-and-time warp phenomenon sites [including Neal Cassady's old pad], stretches up the Haight Street hill. Haight Street connects with Divisadero, at the base of what is traditionally the beginning of 'The Haight,' the intersection near the Both/and (where you could just walk in anytime and hear Monk, John Lee Hooker, and John Handy as they practiced for the evening show), Thelma's Soul Food [Rodney Albin lived next door], and other cool places.

Haight Street proceeds up, passing Buena Vista-Corona Heights Park. Cross Central and you'll see an instant karma Ziggy Marley mural on the corner. Continue on into the wrap of 1090 Page Street [Big Brother & The Holding Company - the house no longer stands] residential zone,  straight into the heart of "the Haight." The corner of Haight and Masonic, once The Psychedelic Shop [later the Holistic Center for metaphysical study] and across the street where Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream shop is now, was once The Drug Store Cafe. Later the name changed to the Drog Store Cafe after LSD went into prohibition status. Further on most head shops were open, The Print Mint, and Straight Theatre, etc.  Now there is a stone wall mural where the Straight Theatre once existed. Across the street, 1711 Haight Street is still open, the shop where I once did counseling and readings for tourists passing through Haight-Ashbury wonderland. It felt like Middle-earth!  On the road to Stanyon Street pedestrian entry to Golden Gate Park* are Sun [Straight Theatre @ Shrader], nebulous Mercury Temple zoned near Quicksilver's rehearsal hall, and Digger's Free Store.

Gabriel's Feed, near Sun and Mercury temples is where the infamous "international bust," happened during one of Gabriel's renown community dinners. He welcomed all in the community to regularly scheduled, public [same night each week] celebrations of the unequaled spaghetti repast. Although this location is marked on the map, it is not a sacred and ancient temple in a traditional sense of the word. The reminiscent scrapbook should honor this event nevertheless, since Gabriel's Feed nurtured so many of San Francisco's finest - as well as the culturally devout, international community. Refer to The Diggers for the stories about the Panhandle in Golden Gate Park during The Summer of Love. Kezar Stadium and the Polo Fields top the sunshine venue list north of the Stanyan Street 'doorway.'  -Left, Vesta Temple spirit, by Solomon

Griffin, one of many migrating surfers, eventually traded his Southern California surfboard for a day-glo paint set, made history and got his name in the paper. Check The Unknown Museum for other LA contributors. Psychedelic era dance/concert poster art is symbolic of the emerging community collective consciousness. Notes From Underground, Herb "Mr. San Francisco" Caen, and Charles "Peanuts" Schultz inspired a North Beach literary link with current events related to Haight-Ashbury origins. Still, long before Caen coined the term "beatnik" in 1958, Bohemians were "in" around town.  Anais Ninn gave lectures in downtown art galleries followed by her parade of "groupies."  "Everyone" met in their own or neighborhood galleries. Later,  as people migrated like wood elves to the Grey Havens of San Francisco, they were sustained by store fronts, bookstores, and coffee shops. The "I and Thou" near the Straight Theatre, on Haight Street, flourished during the Summer of Love.

High society in the Haight was based on cultural contribution as opposed to rhetoric [see Fisher on HIP] and the social playing field was 'equal opportunity' oriented. Not to digress, it should be noted somewhere for the record that, although exhibitionism was not generally frowned on, it was rated. Nudity scored low on the 'rock 'em scale [since anyone could remove their clothing] though not considered totally déclassé. Right, in fashion Nicky Hopkins - from the UK.

Research 'energy readings' of people, places, and things -traditional domain of the metaphysical elite - blossomed overnight to awaken pedestrian interest. Thorough, sophisticated, even technically measured observation skills evolved to the level of a social science, with it's own local colour, fashion, and hip lexicon that still works. Higher skull senses [ESP and radar] phased into systems previously dedicated to the standard five. Physical and second sight, vital for forged locks on the texture of visual fields, still train attention on the microcosm as an infinitely rich and complex network. Focus on unearthed formulae that balance macrocosm and microcosm are now rooted in the mainstream.

Below left,  Quicksilver Messengers of '68 doing it right~ live in Marin County over the Golden Gate and through the rainbow tunnel ~ no surprise they set up a rehearsal hall just off Haight Street, near the Mercury Temple site that adheres to a frequency set for The Transparency Wave and Muses with a Mountain Lake Wave.

Quicksilver Lightning ~ Mercury's Children, illustrates round art construction for Gary Duncan and John Cipollina.** John Cipollina lived in a Sausalito houseboat for a short but colourful slice of life, as did Varda and Alan Watts, the spiritual guru for many on the bridge between the beats and hippie whirl.

Watts [combust Sun 14° Capricorn 51'and Mercury 15°13' Capricorn] eventually had his bones stolen, not atypical for a Buddhist with a compelling [Mars 11°Capricorn 28'] destiny aspect. [see BEAT]  If you're interested in Mercurial placement in Star Charts, see Redford and Mercury's Children] Some popular literary and entertainment influences are also found on Artist Influences link up.

Readers near Straight Theatre Sun and Mercury Temple power sites answered tourist questions about the big and little universe. For the most part, tourists wanted entry level guidelines. The little universe was often related to the personality symbolized by the vibrations of Zodiacal gemstones, rather than alchemical formulae concerning the seven ores. There were many artists, metallurgists, and traders with original art to sell anyone interested in a necklace. Love beads also represented combined power themes expressed in mineral and metal, itemized in the crystal-clear gallery,  The Stone. In general these carried with them an association similar to the braid design in three metals, gold, silver, and copper.

The microcosm and the macrocosm usually line up spontaneously unless some outside force intervenes.   It was common for downtown nine-to-fivers from the financial district  to try a 'pseudo-hip' mindset by wearing love beads, flower power jackets, or wigs from Market Street. It was simple to copy from the poster art. Everyone knew if they were from the trading floor when they got on the dance floor - no one said anything. Then tour buses began an invasion much less appealing than the two waves of musical influx from across the pond. The mood changed in a dramatic sense as loudspeakers drowned out the birdsong in the trees up and down the street. They were not 'disturbing the peace' according to 'authorities.'

Gavin Arthur, Astrologer to the Beat Generation     Gavin Arthur, universally conceded the genius Beat astrologer of the later Twentieth Century - considered the man in the know - generally commanded respect for two reasons, above and beyond his brilliant interpretation of the round art. Gavin Arthur enjoyed a dual political distinction. First, Arthur's close family link with the White House, as the great grandson [I believe - correct me if I'm wrong] of Chester A. Arthur, our 21st president. Arthur ascended to the top rung of the political ladder following the assassination of President Garfield* in 1880, under the dark cloud of the '20 year curse.' Second, Gavin Arthur and Ronald Reagan studied astrology as a science [European system] for several years before Reagan launched his political career. Reagan is one of few people who escaped the fatal Saturn-Jupiter conjunction. There was always wide speculation Reagan circumvented the gravest impact of the curse because he and Arthur mastered a variety of binary solutions during their studies.

Trin introspective in the Haight-Ashbury during hectic work schedule for The Matrix

"I'm a real homebody. I went to work, came home, watched TV, worked out. I stayed in the Haight-Ashbury in an apartment that I rented - I  loved it. I lived on a really windy street. And I loved driving to Marin, over the Golden Gate Bridge, seeing everyone on their bikes...   I like to just have a coffee and walk around, watch people and get a vibe."  -Carrie-Anne Moss, Trinity in The Matrix trilogy

Celebration of dance as an art form experienced a rebirth. Resurgent script and images associated with The Avalon Ballroom and Fillmore Auditorium illustrate how much the power of community that had existed in pre-Roman systems resurfaced. Many performers and promoters comment on the festival atmosphere *** that pervades The Haight. Events akin to the May Pole rite or temple dance, as resurrected via occultist Rudolph Steiner's Eurhythmy method, are taught in schools as a result of the renaissance.  Picture above, Peter Albin [Big Brother] and Mickey Hart [Grateful Dead] at Tribute to Life of Chet Helms. The Baggins birthday party in The Lord of The Rings, features the Hobbiton band [Frodo on drums] and a Shire folk dance in circular form. The same style circle corresponds to traditional Autumn Equinox festivities filmed in the Robin of Sherwood series, The Blessing.

Many 'silent sponsors' such as Salvadore Dali who linked Bohemian,  beatnik, and hip through his painting and film, found the  Haight- Ashbury fascinating. Dali's first San Francisco show in the mid-40s at The Legion of Honor spotlighted his austere 'Bread' theme; when Dali made his presence felt during the Longshoreman Hall 'transition years' he was a changed man; First Amendment and Civil Rights issues overflowed from the beats for hippie interest, and on everyone's mind was the topic of Free Speech vs government censorship. [The 1951 Introduction to 'This I Believe' by

The censored, yet ever popular Vorpal Gallery pushed the issue into the spotlight via Ron Boise and the amazing April, 1964 Kama Sutra show at the gallery, then located in an alleyway behind the Vesuvio Cafe. Since then 'Freedom of Speech' has remained central to the culture in San Francisco.  Check Alan Watts; see also Rod McKuen for poets "Safe Place To Land."  "Sculpture by Ron Boise: The Kama Sutra Theme." Evergreen Review, 9(36):64-65, June 1965.  A transcript of Alan Watts's impromptu talk at a showing of Ron Boise's sculpture at Big Sur Hot Springs. Eleven Boise sculptures from the Kama Sutra theme, exhibited at the Vorpal Gallery in April 1964, brought about the arrest of Muldoon Elder, the gallery's proprietor and a salesman on obscenity charges, and confiscation of the statuary. After a nine-day trial the jury acquitted the defendants and released the statuary. Watts speaks of the statuary as "pushing the line back" in the same way that Miller, Lawrence, and Joyce did in literature. Where do we draw the line in the expression of intimacy--what is "on-scene" and what is "off-scene" or "obscene"?

Artist influence links are posted @ Nature Spirits   ~ The laws of nature are respected in San Francisco, where everything is linked with the preservation mantra. Everything is about ecology, stain glass, and pre-quake hand crafted Victorian architecture that seems always under assault by high rise "investors" wishing to transform the Haight into their ultimate real estate cash cow. Locals, such as a band of rock & roll icons under the headline 'Jefferson Airplane' [above] decided to save the area. The tug of war in pre-Summer of Love years centered on The Straight reopening. Finally, after lots of red tape and tangled legalities, the purchase and remodeling of The Straight Theatre went along with a little help from UK friends and everyone carried on

Residents took out loans to purchase "Painted Ladies" [one of the harlequin style models]  rather than see them reduced to "souvenir" doorknobs, cabinet handles, and fire wood. First time investors rescued the grand Victorians and kept the three story height secure near Golden Gate Park. Several groups bought and shared homes in student fashion. The Albin's residence, 1090 Page Street, was central to  Haight-Ashbury culture as a grand Victorian lady with a delightful recital room. 1090 became known as the first  site of Big Brother and The Holding Company dances. Through stain glass doors, neatly tucked under the first floor,  was a consummate concert chamber with it's token antique harpsichord and plenty of space for dancing.

The atmosphere at 1090 was similar to a huge luxury liner, like The Titanic, as represented on  Quicksilver's cover art for What About Me. The water lines under most of the structure instituted  a somewhat floating experience, so that just beneath the waking conscious mind, the floor could be imagined to be suspended on water, or floating like a giant water lily, named for the Queen, Victoria regia, with leaves over six feet in diameter. The emotional climate was usually like strong green leaves and flowers - white to rose-colour, to match a San Francisco night sky. This sensation of submerged sensory perception required no alteration or cessation of other sensorium networking.

The house seemed to attract unusual pets as with most strong crossing lines,  most obviously cats. A girl on the second floor had a coatimundi, and there were rabbits for Willie The Wizard's magic hat, a monkey I had  a couple of months, a large white temple cat the size of a water-spaniel, and, of course Rodney Albin's pet shark in the first floor bath. The community kitchen inspired creative culinary experimentation at all times.  This was encouraged. The bottom floor tenants enjoyed Big Brother's daily practice sessions that began around 5 PM, and often continued into the evening. The atmosphere was eclectic and multi-dimensional, one of constant good-will.  Most residents had lived in Victorian homes before or choose the Haight-Ashbury because the architecture, landscape, and day to day images are clearly reminiscent of a pre-1906 quake quality of life.

As for the Civil Rights Movement, most West Coast students felt deep concern for the rights of others, having become aware of the common target practice of the FBI - ignoring those known unAmericans in favor of attacking a vocal 'free speech' community. Many felt the issues facing those not allowed to vote in the South would eventually face the rest of the country. They risked their life and helped Southerners to cast their vote. As far as the story about Civil Rights leaders [Joan Baez, et al] joining the movement to advance the sale of a record to promote a career [University of California textbooks] it is hard to imagine how those assertions can appear. No one can enjoy a financial benefit if cut down while helping people register to vote.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest won five Academy Awards, however "Forman does his best to minimize Kesey's misogynist undertones. By making all the characters more fully rounded, he reduces the polarization of good and evil that leaves the novel open to these charges, avoiding the novel's tendency to turn McMurphy into a hero or Christ figure." (from Novels into Film by John C. Tibbetts and James M. Welsh, 1997) Book/script ~ During this project Ken Kesey learned an important lesson, not in the mano y mano category, but legalese. When you negotiate a contract involving the medium of film within the Hollywood industry as an author,
the items you must see in the movie - those things you cannot live without - have to be written into your contract or you may not see them in the final cut, perhaps not even in the director's cut.

Michael Douglas info ~  Kirk Douglas Star Chart ~ DVD info

Kirk Douglas championed Cuckoo's Nest when he played McMurphy [Jack Nicholson took on the film version] in an adaptation by Dale Wasserman on the great white way. The production was a tremendous hit during the 1963-64 season. There is a famous New York picture of Douglas in his 'king of the mountain' mode, standing between two theatres.  Over his left shoulder, the marquee reads Kirk Douglas in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. On his right hand, Kirk Douglas in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea completes the matching set. Does it get any better than that? Douglas bought the rights to Kesey's novel, believing the show could be moved to Hollywood after the play's 82 performances at  the Cort Theatre. His son Michael Douglas later took on the project and agreed to several surgical cut-departures from the book in order to produce the successful film. Kesey, true to his perfectionist Virgo/Leo nature, sued the producers. In his 1973 compilation of various trivia and truths titled, Garage Sale, Kesey comments on Cuckoo's Nest characters and especially his preliminary work building the structure of the novel. Kesey's early overview thoughts illustrate the difference between the novel and the movie.

Ken Kesey replaced Kerouac as producer/director within Neal Cassady's perpetual 'live it now' road script, which they graduated for inclusion of celluloid and LSD. The two took a psychedelic bus, with the Merry Pranksters on board,  to the New York World's Fair. The novelist Thomas Wolfe chronicled the trip in "The Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test." Although Kesey accomplished many far out feats, it is not exactly true he became the inspiration for the Haight-Ashbury or the Alternative Culture flourishing within San Francisco's artistic community.

The blueprints for the Haight collective were already drawn up in the very early sixties before the bus trip was launched - the negotiations for The Straight Theatre were underway before even the first publication of Cuckoo's Nest. Kesey and Cassady certainly influenced the Haight-Ashbury and that community definitely influenced them. Kerouac and Cassady with Kesey @ 'The Beat Goes On.'

  1. The Beat philosophy was based on Eastern mysticism: “beat” referred to “beatitude,” the beat of jazz, and possibly from a comment by New York hustler Herbert Huncke (“I'm beat,” perpetuated by Kerouac). Further East Coast insight, post-Beat revelations, and personal inspiration are delivered  in the Simon & Schuster audio book, CHRONICLES, by Bob Dylan, read by Sean Penn. In a candid Newsweek  interview aptly titled, The Book of Bob, David Gates asks about the long awaited memoirs, reportedly sans Dylan's lyrical or personal evasion.

  2. Rex is treading the machine faster and faster. The sounds rise in unimaginable disunity. Finally, M'kehla steps onto stage in a black tux and high hat, carrying a bongo. He feels around in the noise for some beat, some basic premise, and, finding none, starts his own, and the cacophony flows into pulsing agreement.          -Ken Kesey, KESEY'S GARAGE SALE

  3. The Straight Theatre was a resource for such inspired films as, BLACK ORPHEUS, and held the world premiere of THE MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, arranged by Beatle George Harrison with owner Luther Green, while Harrison was on tour in The Haight-Ashbury.

The Haight represented wholistic philosophy in step with the dawning Age of Aquarius, keeping time with The Fifth Dimension [Hair: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical] and the play that packed the Biltmore Theatre for almost five years.

The whole person is nurtured, regarded with respect, at all levels in The Age of Enlightenment. Spiritual and physical fortitude are equally valuable within this kind community. Purchase and preparation of meals, an art form and spiritual ritual, helped by the Diggers and others who organized community gardens, kept physical nourishment  healthy, toxin free, and affordable. The Food Co-op brought high quality food to your front door at half the amount it cost in the grocery store. Most popular theories on dining and diet, such as 'Eat Right' by Adelle Davis, and the eight step macrobiotic diet [developed for the Japanese Navy] were easy to implement. The philosophy may divide the tummy into fourths as one part is reserved for light, one for spirit, and the last two are for physical sustenance. Food is eaten when ripe as it drops from the tree so no "death" is required to sustain a family. Akasha/life spirit force in the West is inherent within flame/spirit. In the East, akasha is the fifth element. Most cooks are not pure vegetarian nutritionists, yet will spiritualize family meals and provide a pleasant dining environment.  Many prepare foodstuffs while chanting or praying so high octave energy is infused into each dish. Check one of the popular techniques in the film, Like Water For Chocolate. The favorite chants preferred for alternative culture culinary skill will resonate with these:  OM [see interview with Yogeshwar Muni], Hare Krishna, and Buddhist prayers. Read about celebrity Buddhist, Rock & Roll Pillar, Tina Turner.   "Chant the name of The Lord and be free!"  Notes about George Harrison and Pandit Ravi Shankar @ Beatlemania.
