George Lucas will launch Lucas Museum of Narrative Artone of the most tremendous, vibrant and green museum campuses of any major American city that will partner education with our neighborhood schools and create jobs throughout the city of Chicago.
San Francisco and Los Angeles also had sought the museum. Lucas said in a written statement that he hopes to open the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in 2018.
I am humbled to be joining such an extraordinary museum community and to be creating the museum in a city that has a long tradition of embracing the arts, the statement said.
The selection was somewhat of a surprise, given that Lucas has such close ties to California. He is a native of the state, with the Lucasfilm visual effects division based in San Francisco and the headquarters for Lucasfilm and Skywalker Sound set up across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County.
But Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel pushed hard for his city. And Chicago was always given a good chance at the Lucas museum, in large part because Mellody Hobson, wife of George Lucas, and a prominent businesswoman, is from Chicago. Chicago closed down Promontory Point along the Lake Michigan shore so the couple could host a star-studded party to celebrate in her home town after their California wedding.
For the Lucas museum, Chicago offered up a slice of real estate along the lakefront that is near other attractions, including the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History. At the same time, San Francisco suffered a setback when it rejected the proposed George Lucas first choice of location, Crissy Field, a former U.S. Army airfield in the Presidio. The board then offered Lucas a second site near a digital arts center near the Golden Gate Bridge.
Emanuel has long been trying to portray Chicago as a global destination. He picked up the pieces of the San Francisco rejection and proactively made a pitch for the museum. The Star Wars museum, coupled with Chicago's strong standing for the Obama Library, will certainly make Chicago a much more attractive tourist spot. Throughout the decision process, a spokesman for Lucas praised the city for the attention it heaps on culture, architecture, innovations and education, some of which are the themes this Lucas museum will seek to promote.
Lucas, who now lives part-time in the Windy City, has previously called Chicago his second home. Lucas wed Chicagoan Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, in 2013.
The museum will offer unprecedented educational opportunities for young people and families, said LMNA. Lucas and a wide range of educators and artists describe the plans for the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum: Its mission: To teach the history of storytelling.
A first-of-its kind institution, The Lucas Cultural Arts Museum is designed to serve as the USA premiere venue for understanding the connections and lineage of illustrative and visual art.
From the cave drawings of Altimira to the digital artistry of Industrial Light and Magic, from the Renaissance masters to Norman Rockwell, the Museum is an unprecedented leap forward in the concept of museums. In addition to its permanent collection,
the Museum will provide gallery space for such traveling exhibitions as Star Wars Identities.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel George Lucas has revolutionized the art of storytelling over the last four decades, and we are honored to be the recipient of this incredible legacy investment that will allow everyone to learn about and experience narrative arts. No other museum like this exists in the world, making it a tremendous educational, cultural, and job creation asset for all Chicagoans, as well as an unparalleled draw for international tourists.
